an open door in space

Jo Bled “an Open Door in Space”

Track 1: As Dreams Are Made

Track 2: Tumult Soon Subsides

In February 2020, right on the cusp of pandemic, I realized a long-time dream and purchased a “Key of Z” frottoir (musical washboard or rubboard) from Tee Don Landry, who’s father, a metal craftsman, was “instrumental” in designing the first washboard created solely for musical purposes. This instrument had always fascinated me because of its simplicity, its monotonous sound, and its affiliation with Zydeco music, a swamp/blues/r&b/folk hybrid music that is so intrinsically Louisiana that, in my mind, they are one-in-the-same.

I set out to incorporate the rubboard into my own music, a completely different hybrid of experimental/noise/percussion. I could find no instance where the rubboard was used in such a way, and the possibility to create something nearly 100% unique was attractive (and daunting)

The two pieces on this album are the beginnings of what I hope to do with the hybrid sound. Track one is a “gratingly meditative” piece for amplified rubboard, delay & looper. Track two is a drumset-heavy piece balanced against an increasingly prevalent rubboard loop.
